Calgary Trauma Therapy

Support for healing, connection and a greater sense of safety

Trauma can affect how we feel in our bodies, understand ourselves and connect with others. At Kula Holistic Services in Calgary, we offer trauma-informed therapy for children, youth and adults, alongside support for couples and families.

Whether you’re seeking help after a recent event or exploring experiences from earlier in life, we work alongside you to understand your needs and develop a care plan that respects your pace, strengths and goals.

What is trauma?

Trauma can arise from an event, a series of events or ongoing circumstances experienced as harmful, threatening or overwhelming. Its effects may continue after the experience has ended, influencing emotions, physical responses, relationships and everyday life.

People respond differently to similar experiences. You don’t need a diagnosis or certainty that your experience “counts” as trauma to seek support.

Single-incident trauma follows a specific event, such as a serious accident, assault, medical emergency or natural disaster. An experience that happened once can still have lasting effects.

Complex trauma involves repeated or prolonged traumatic experiences, often within relationships or circumstances where safety and escape were limited. It may affect a person’s sense of self, ability to manage emotions and capacity to feel safe with others.

Relational or attachment trauma describes harm within important relationships, particularly when someone relied on for care, protection or connection was also a source of fear, neglect or repeated hurt. These experiences can shape trust, boundaries, closeness and expectations of relationships.

These experiences can overlap. Therapy offers space to understand their impact without needing to fit your story into a single category.

Trauma support for children, youth and adults

Trauma can look different at different ages. Children may communicate distress through behaviour, play, sleep difficulties or challenges at school. Youth may struggle with emotions, relationships, identity or growing independence. Adults may notice patterns of anxiety, shame, disconnection, heightened alertness or difficulty feeling settled.

Some of our therapists have specialized training in complex trauma and dissociation, while others have focused training in trauma affecting children and youth. Dissociation can involve feeling disconnected from your body, emotions, memories or surroundings. We take time to understand these experiences and tailor care accordingly.

For children and youth, therapy considers developmental needs and may involve caregivers when appropriate, with attention to consent, privacy and supportive relationships. Across all ages, our care is LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent affirming.

Approaches tailored to your needs

Our practitioners draw on different approaches according to their training and your needs, preferences and readiness. These may include:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Expressive arts, offering creative ways to explore experiences and emotions

  • Other trauma-informed approaches that support coping, emotional regulation, connection and trauma processing

Your therapist will explain the options, answer questions and work with you to choose an approach. Therapy may begin with building trust, strengthening coping strategies and finding ways to feel more grounded before exploring difficult memories. You won’t be expected to share everything at once.

Care built on safety, trust and collaboration

Trauma-informed care shapes how we work with you throughout therapy.

Safety: We work to create a physically and emotionally welcoming environment, checking in about comfort, boundaries and what helps you feel more secure.

Trust and transparency: We explain the therapy process, confidentiality and its limits, treatment options and next steps so you can make informed decisions.

Collaboration: Your experience and perspective guide the work. Together, we develop goals, review progress and adjust your care plan.

Choice and empowerment: You have a voice in your care, including what you discuss and the pace of treatment. We respect your strengths, identity, culture and lived experience.

Support for couples and families affected by trauma

When one or several people in a family or relationship have experienced trauma, its effects can influence the whole system. Communication, trust, intimacy, parenting and responses to conflict may become more difficult. People may have different ways of seeking safety or managing distress, which can lead to misunderstandings or disconnection.

Couples and family therapy can help you understand these patterns, communicate needs, strengthen boundaries and develop more supportive ways of responding to one another. We consider each person’s experiences while working toward shared goals.

Your therapist will help determine whether individual, couples or family therapy—or a combination of supports—is appropriate, with attention to each person’s safety, consent and needs.
